What's it like to be a Portfolio Manager?
Portfolio Managers are responsible for managing investments and assets for clients, including creating and managing the overall investment strategy that is appropriate for their client’s needs and risk profile. Portfolio Managers may serve either individual or institutional clients.
Tasks and duties
- Meeting with clients to discuss investment objectives such as risk tolerance and desired return.
- Working with clients to establish short and long-term investment goals.
- Determining the most suitable asset classes (for example, equities, real estate and bonds) based on the client’s objectives.
- Keeping up to date with the stock market.
- Managing risk.
- Keeping track of investments and measuring the performance of the portfolio.
- Advising clients on when to withdraw their investments.

To become a Portfolio Manager, you must have a high level of education and professional accreditation, as well as appropriate levels of investment management experience.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in finance, accounting, commerce, economics or business. Selecting subjects that focus on investing, such as risk management, asset management or statistics can give you a solid background in portfolio management.
- 2.Consider completing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or a masters degree in finance. Portfolio Manager roles can be competitive, so many employers prefer candidates who have a masters degree.
- 3.Complete a financial internship. While you're studying, you could seek out internships or work experience at investment firms. Gaining experience is a crucial step in starting a career as a Portfolio Manager.
- 4.Gain an entry-level position in finance, such as a Financial Analyst position.
- 5.Consider gaining certification as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder. This certification is an effective way to demonstrate your commitment to becoming a Portfolio Manager.
